...First of all, the student can take a picture walk through their book if possible, predicting what the story will be about, and then say the beginning sound of the word in question. Using context clues they can think of what word makes sense, and so on. To help define words, children can draw pictures, give examples, or write similar words.

...I try to make tutoring fun, make use of manipulatives and try to make connections to students' daily life. For example, a 4th grader I am currently working with was having difficulty with fractions. In order to help him understand adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions we made Play-Dough pizzas and then deciding how we would share our pizzas with our family and friends.
