...My students are familiar with, "Use what you know to solve what you don't know." With unknowns ("x" and/or "y"), there are many ways to approach a problem. When a student is struggling, I like to use a simple approach. Taking a basic problem like "3X + 6 = 12", for example, and then narrowing down what a possible answer could be.
