...I have had sucess tutoring students whose parents only spoke Spanish. We used flashcards a lot. More importantly, we used a word in a simple sentence and then a more complex sentence.

...I have loved math since I was about nine so I am always trying to find new ways to solve problems. This helps a lot when I'm tutoring and the typical method doesn't work. Drawing pictures, even though I am not a great artist, and using physical objects seems to be the method that works best with students who don't enjoy math.
