...I think teaching one-on-one is very effective, and I don't give up until the student can do it one their own. I know that it is sometimes difficult to get excited about a particular math concept, especially when you don't think you will need it down the road. Chances are that you won't.

...Although I am a certified geek, I have worked with at-risk youth and also with adult students. Realizing that math and science can be difficult, I am patient enough to attack the problems from the student's particular strengths. For instance, if a student needs to have hands-on experience of fractions, we may take out some measuring cups or build something using those tedious fractions.
