...Similarly, if a student does not understand how an algebraic tool works, he or she is forced to memorize how to use it. If the student learns how it works, no memorization is needed. Not only is understanding the algebraic rules easier than memorizing them, it also makes mistakes much less likely, and to do otherwise is, quite frankly, missing the point of subjects like Algebra.
