...I've tutored TAKS for several years. It requires algebra and geometry techniques in a straight forward manner, and is not as tricky as the ACT or SAT tests. I took this same test a few years ago going for my teaching certificate.

...It's amazing how many students I have heard saying they're "just bad at math". But I've never met anyone who truly was. After determining where and why a student is struggling, whether it be fundamentals, problem solving approach or something else, I put together a plan that begins will small successes.

...I played competitive chess for about 10 years. I'm rated just a few points shy of a 1600 USCF rating. When I was playing competitively, I was beating 1700-1900 rated players.

...Sometimes, this is all a student needs in order to achieve success in the classroom. Finally, I believe that it is very important to include the parents and other adults important in a child's life in the learning process. For example, during some sessions with elementary students, I may ask the parent(s) to help make a learning game or activity that can be fun and promote learning.

...I enjoy individualizing each tutoring session to each student and explaining confusing concepts in a clear, easily understandable manner. I think instilling confidence in students is the key to successful tutoring. Every student is capable of thriving in the subject they are struggling in.
