...Recently I have been tutoring a GED student in math, and he has had trouble with fractions. Drawing pictures didn't help; using multi-colored candy didn't help. Then one day the student was punching in numbers on his calculator and asked, “Is ½ the same as ¼ plus ¼?” Needless to say, I was very happy to hear that he had caught on.
