...I start by introducing them to "pin yin", our form of the alphabet, which is used all throughout mainland China. It is the first thing we learn going into school (before learning the characters), and used in all the grade school textbooks. Through pin yin, one can learn to pronounce all 4 intonations of Chinese words and begin speaking.
