...I know from first-hand experience that it is very difficult to learn without getting your hands dirty, especially for topics like Math and Comp Sci. I'll use textbooks at times as a reference or for having a plentiful set of examples. For Math topics, I'll typically come up with examples on the fly so that I can focus on areas where students have most trouble.
