ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst having previously flown on the ISS in 2014 is making a return trip to the International Space Station in the Horizons Mission. Gerst will also take command of the space station in the second part of the mission. He only the second ESA astronaut to do so.
Gerst will join NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Roscosmos commander Sergei Prokopyev in the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft for the ride up. Gerst previously flew on the ISS in 2014.
According to ESA: “The mission is called Horizons as a symbol for the unknown and what lies beyond. As part of all Space Station missions, scientific experiments make up a large part of the astronauts’ time to broaden our horizons as humankind. ”
